A quick plug for gardens from our founder -
I was born surrounded by green thumbs. My dad, my grandpa, my grandma, they placed the seeds and the seeds GREW and grew WELL! My son also acquired a green thumb early on and has loved gardening and is great at it! WHY THEN? WHY did it skip over my thumb! I plant it, it dies. I follow the directions, it still dies. Simply not fair!
In this endeavor to turn a thumb a few shades lighter, I have researched and thought much about the art of gardening and have found SO many metaphors and lessons that this beautiful art can teach. From learning to forgive someone, to separating wants and needs, to becoming an actual form of therapy my college roommate got a degree in, gardening has a distinct way of teaching important lessons.
-Forgiveness is like composting - we put the yucky stuff that happens in a bucket in our minds, we move on and better our own lives, not holding on to the yuck anymore and over time it has potential to become a learning experience and actually adds "nutrients" to the soil of our mind and experiences, we can relate to other who have had to try out "composting the mind". It requires time! and that's ok!
-Needs vs wants - In a garden you have to thin out your seedlings, like we often have to stop and thin out our lives, our possessions, stressors, even projects, separating the wants from the needs, and in the end our harvest is ALL the stronger for it! Our efforts are more focused on the items we want to grow and not spread as thin.
- Horticulture therapy is a widely used modality of therapy, related to the art and music therapies, it is the king of garden metaphors and science shows getting ones hands in the dirt is just good for us! It teaches life lessons and is a release that in the end creates something beautiful!
You may have the classic concern "I don't have room for a garden" to which I lovingly and happily say you are wrong! Plants aren't picky! They grow up, they grow sideways, even down from a hanging pot! they just need some light, nutrients, and water and they don't really care about the surroundings, they're happy. Closets can become gardens! the corner of the living room can become a garden place.
